GISAID is a global science initiative and primary source established in 2008 that provides open-access to genomic data of influenza viruses and the coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. On January 10, 2020, the first whole-genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 were made available on GISAID, which enabled global responses to the pandemic, including the development of the first vaccines and diagnostic tests to detect SARS-CoV-2.
GISAID is the world’s biggest database of SARS-CoV-2 sequences, storing more than 700,000 genomes from more than 160 countries, according to peer-reviewed academic journal Science Magazine. Researchers around the world have used the GISAID to assess mutations and prevalence of COVID-19 variants.

Try "criticism of GISAID" on any search engine, you will find about 2-3 results, which appear to be blog entries in the vein of rants, or Reddit posts, rather than the journalistic or peer-reviewed concerns for which Wikipedians search. A row appears to have broken out between the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID) and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) over the EpiFlu virus sequence sharing database – one that has been widely praised by researchers for its contribution to rapid sharing of sequences during the current H1N1 pandemic.Visitors to the Epiflu database homepage part of the GISAID GISAID Launches Second Influenza Database.

the rapid release of the IVPP GSD of H7N9 viruses by the Chinese authorities and distribution via the GISAID database. We gratefully acknowledge the authors, originating and submitting laboratories of the sequences from GISAID’s EpiFlu™ Database on which this research is based. The list is detailed below. Segment ID referred to as ‘database access agreement’ or ‘data use agreement’) A ata access agreementD is a contract between a database user (this includes data providers and data users) on the one hand and the database (custodian of the data) on the other. It generally contains terms and conditions for accessing and using data hosted by the database. 2020-10-12 The data used for matching primers and probes are downloaded from the sequence database GISAID. The data shown in ECDC PrimerScan are updated at least every Monday, but may be updated more frequently depending on the situation and availability of new sequence data.

China National GeneBank DataBase (CNGBdb) is an official partner of the GISAID Initiative. It provides access to EpiCoV and features the most complete collection of hCoV-19 genome sequences along with related clinical and epidemiological data. GISAID's resulting DAA, which came into force in May 2008, retained the principle of a publicly accessible database – meaning that any natural person (whether scientist or not) could obtain credentials to access data in GISAID, predicated upon a one‐time positive verification of the individual's identity, and agreement to the terms of the DAA, which license the use of data in GISAID.
